Introduction to the Foundation Programme

The Malta Foundation Programme (FP) is a two-year training programme for newly graduated doctors. It is a bridge between your medical school training and specialty training. The programme essentially consists of structured teaching, hands-on training and assessments whilst working in a supervised hospital or primary-care environment.

The Curriculum of the FP Malta as well as its operations as described in the Reference Guide are the same as those of UK Foundation Programme. Trainees document their assessments and competences in an e-portfolio provided by NHS Education for Scotland (NES).

Each trainee will be supervised by an Educational Supervisor (ES) who has been specifically trained for this job. They will have regular meetings to discuss the trainee’s personal development plans and progress in their training. Moreover, the ES offers support to the trainee and makes sure that if additional help is needed, they are directed to the necessary resources. It is the duty of the ES to provide reports in the trainee’s e-portfolio on the trainee’s progress regularly, and will be able to recommend successful trainees to be issued with the  Foundation Year 1 Certificate of Completion or the Foundation Programme Completion Certificate (FPCC) after Foundation Year 2.

Trainees will also be assigned to a Clinical Supervisor (CS) in each of the placements they work and train in. The CS makes sure that the trainee gets adequate clinical supervision at the workplace, performs some of the supervised learning events (SLEs) and assessments, offers the necessary support, and issues a clinical supervisor’s report at the end of the placement.

The Malta FP is managed by the Malta Foundation School. The School”s operations are overseen by the Malta Foundation School Management Committee whose members and terms of reference can be found here. The governing body is the Malta Foundation School Board, and its members and terms of reference can be found here.

The Malta Foundation School and Foundation Programme are quality-assured by the Medical Council Malta.

The Malta FP offers a variety of other resources including an Academic programme, Careers training day, Taster weeks, and other workshops which are organised throughout the year.
