The Malta Foundation Programme (FP) was officially launched in July 2009. It is an Affiliated Programme to the United Kingdom Foundation Programme (UKFP). This means that the Malta FP is the same as the UKFP. Its operations are based on the same Reference Guide and offers the same curriculum and educational and training opportunities as UK Foundation Schools. The Malta FP leads up to the same Foundation Programme Certificate of Completion (FPCC) as the UKFP.
The affiliation status was awarded to the Malta Foundation School on 23 June 2009 by the then Director of the United Kingdom Foundation Programme Office, Professor Derek Gallen. This status enables trainees who complete the Malta Foundation Programme successfully to compete on the same level as those who are successful in the UK Foundation Programme for specialty posts in Malta*, the United Kingdom or elsewhere.
The Malta Foundation School is bound to meet the quality standards of the Malta Medical Council and the UK Foundation Programme in order to maintain its affiliation status.
Since the start of the Malta FP, affiliation has been repeatedly renewed by the UKFP and Health Education England after the Malta Foundation School met the required quality standards.
*Specialty training in Malta is coordinated by the Post-Graduate Medical Training Programme.
